Chapter 2 - The Illness Scheduled Before Breakfast

Evelyn arrived before the ambulance left, wearing a cream suit and the irritated expression of someone inconvenienced by another person’s fear.
She called the capsules harmless supplements and accused Melanie of creating panic to make herself appear important.
“A home-care nurse should remember she is employed to follow instructions, not embarrass this family.”
Melanie did not lower her eyes.
“I was hired to protect a child, not protect wealthy adults from consequences.”
At the hospital, tests showed Ethan had swallowed part of a powerful adult medication never prescribed to him.
Doctors expected a full recovery, but the drug could cause dizziness, nausea and confusion.
Exactly those symptoms appeared in the custody petition Evelyn had prepared hours earlier.
The document accused David of leaving medication within Ethan’s reach and requested that Rebecca become temporary guardian of both the child and his trust.
David confronted his mother.
“You created the symptoms, wrote the accusation and expected a judge to call it concern.”
Evelyn’s voice became vicious.
“You married beneath us, ignored my warnings and let that woman’s child inherit what generations of Whitmores built.”
Ethan’s late mother, Julia, had grown up in a working-class Connecticut neighborhood and worked as a hospital billing specialist.
Evelyn had never forgiven David for marrying her.
“She gave him compassion,” David replied. “You gave him a cup filled with evidence.”
Rebecca finally admitted Evelyn ordered her to deliver the drink.
But she insisted she never added the capsules.

Then the hospital pharmacist examined the markings.
The capsules came from a private clinic that had treated Julia shortly before her death.
