Chapter 5 - The Secret David Never Told His Son
David admitted hiring Rebecca after Julia’s death.
He believed someone inside the family had manipulated Julia’s treatment, so he asked Rebecca to watch Evelyn and report anything suspicious.
Rebecca had once been Julia’s closest friend.
David trusted her because she came from outside the Whitmore circle.
But money changed the arrangement.
Evelyn paid Rebecca’s debts, bought her an apartment and promised her a seat on the family foundation.
Rebecca stopped reporting to David and began helping Evelyn.
“You hired me as your spy,” Rebecca snapped. “Do not pretend you brought me here out of kindness.”
David answered, “I paid you to find the truth. You accepted more money to endanger my son.”
Rebecca’s eyes filled with anger.
“People like you always believe poor women should remain loyal for small checks while rich women purchase our survival.”
Melanie refused to let her hide behind class resentment.
“You were exploited, then chose to exploit a child. Pain explains betrayal. It does not erase it.”
Julia’s audio continued.
She had discovered David’s secret investigation before her death and feared he would expose only Evelyn while protecting the Whitmore company.
The family business was built partly through stolen medical deductions from domestic workers and caregivers.
David had known about irregular accounts but remained silent to avoid a public collapse.
Ethan looked at his father from the hospital bed.
“You knew they were stealing?”
David could not lie.
“I knew something was wrong.”
Ethan’s voice trembled.
“And you waited until they hurt me?”
Then investigators opened Julia’s sealed evidence folder.
