Chapter 7 - The Heir Who Refused Stolen Money
Evelyn argued that Ethan should retain the inheritance because innocent children should not be punished for adult misconduct.
Melanie answered, “You never cared about innocent children when their parents wore uniforms.”
David explained the truth to Ethan carefully.
The trust paying for his education and future had been filled with money taken from caregivers, kitchen staff, drivers and elderly patients.
Ethan began to cry.
“I do not want money that made other kids lose their moms.”
Evelyn snapped, “You are nine years old. You do not understand what you are surrendering.”
Ethan looked directly at her.
“I understand that you put medicine in my drink because you wanted my money.”
His simple sentence humiliated her more than any courtroom speech.
The trust was frozen and transferred to a council representing affected workers and families.
Medical claims were reopened.
Caleb’s guardianship ended.
The private clinic was placed under federal control.
Rebecca agreed to testify against Evelyn and Dr. Pierce but requested immunity.
Julia’s former coworkers opposed the deal.
They said wealthy conspirators always purchased mercy by giving prosecutors evidence after poor employees had already paid the price.
The court denied full immunity.
Rebecca would receive consideration, not forgiveness.
Evelyn watched workers take seats at the foundation’s board table.
“You will destroy everything we built,” she hissed.
Melanie replied, “You built it from our fear. Watch what happens when fear stops working.”
Then Dr. Pierce offered one final piece of evidence.
Julia had not died from the medication program.
Her death had occurred after she escaped the clinic and reached a federal investigator.
The investigator was David’s father, Thomas Whitmore.
