Chapter 8 - The Evidence David Kept Locked Away
David remembered receiving his father’s sealed archive after Thomas died.
He never opened several boxes labeled confidential medical litigation because family attorneys warned that doing so could violate patient privacy.
Julia’s name appeared on the first unopened file.
Melanie faced him with open disgust.
“You had the truth inside your own house while families spent years begging courts to believe them.”
David did not defend himself.
“I chose comfort over questions. That choice protected the people who harmed you.”
Evelyn tried to use his guilt against him.
“He is no different from us. He enjoyed the money while pretending to be kinder.”
David answered, “I am responsible. But responsibility does not make you innocent.”
The archive contained Julia’s recorded interview with Thomas.
She explained the medication program, the stolen worker fund and Evelyn’s plan to use Ethan’s symptoms to seize his inheritance.
Thomas promised protection.
Instead, he informed Evelyn and helped move Julia to a private estate.
Julia escaped, but her car was forced off a rural road.
The crash was ruled accidental.
Police reopened the death investigation.
Thomas’s files showed payments to the responding officer, medical examiner and towing company.
Evelyn’s foundation funded all three.
Rebecca claimed she knew nothing about the crash.
Then Julia’s final voicemail was recovered.
She said, “Rebecca followed me from the clinic. If I do not survive, ask why she was driving Thomas’s car.”
Rebecca collapsed into a chair.
She admitted following Julia.
