Chapter 10 - THE SECOND PIPER.

Veterinary records revealed two nearly identical tabby-and-white cats had been processed through the kennel network.
The first Piper belonged to Diane during her final year. Vivian transferred her after Diane’s death and later used the second cat to test whether Maya recognized the difference.
Maya had loved the cat in her arms honestly, but the identity fraud exposed how deeply the network manipulated records.
The original Piper was found safe with a retired doorman in Milwaukee. He had refused to surrender her and kept every receipt.
The building became a tenant-worker cooperative. Rosa returned home with Sol. Nina and Leo received restored housing and compensation. Vivian and Jonathan lost control and faced prosecution. Maya could earn a future role only through an election.
The collars, blue carrier and false eviction files entered a public housing archive.
A plaque read:
“THEY CALLED PETS PROPERTY WHEN TAKING THEM, AND FAMILY ONLY WHEN SELLING THEM.”
At the dedication, Reed opened one final sealed folder.
