THE CAT SHE TRIED TO STEAL / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - THE CAT FROM MAYA’S CHILDHOOD.

The faded green collar belonged to Jasper, the tabby Maya believed died when she was twelve.

Her mother, Diane Carter, had worked as a night custodian in the same building. After she organized tenants against illegal fees, management accused her of neglecting Jasper and removed him.

Vivian smiled coldly.

“Your mother could barely pay rent. We found the cat a better home.”

Maya’s voice sharpened.

“You taught me grief, then called theft compassion.”

Records showed Jasper had lived another eleven years with a wealthy resident upstairs. Diane was evicted two days after asking for him back.

Grant revealed why Maya had returned under an ordinary lease. Diane’s settlement had purchased a controlling share in the building before her death. Maya inherited it but concealed her identity to audit tenant complaints.

Rosa looked at her through video.

“You watched us suffer without telling us who you were?”

Maya lowered her eyes.

“I wanted evidence Vivian could not bury.”

Rosa replied, “And we became the evidence.”

Then Grant found Jasper’s final veterinary file.

The emergency contact was Maya’s father, whom she had never known.
