THE CAT SHE TRIED TO STEAL / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - THE FATHER WHO BOUGHT SILENCE.

Maya’s father was Jonathan Price, founder of the luxury development company that managed the building.

He arrived with attorneys and claimed Diane had chosen secrecy to protect Maya from scandal.

Maya held Jasper’s collar.

“She protected me by letting me believe my cat was dead and my father did not exist?”

Jonathan admitted paying Diane after Vivian threatened to report her as an unfit parent. The settlement required Diane to withdraw tenant claims and surrender any right to contact him publicly.

Rosa’s voice cut through the lobby.

“Rich men create shame, then pay poor women to carry it alone.”

Jonathan said he never approved pet removals.

Grant opened board minutes showing he authorized “animal-related vacancy recovery,” a program rewarding managers whenever a pet complaint led to an empty apartment.

Jonathan called it technical language.

Maya answered, “Technical language is where cruelty hides when executives do not want to picture the hallway.”
