Chapter 9 - THE MEMO THAT LOCKED THE EXITS.
Vanessa admitted drafting the inventory memo that Grant later used to justify locking the exits.
She had written that all staff should remain in place until valuable stock was counted. She never intended physical confinement, but her language gave supervisors permission to treat workers as suspects.
Rosa’s anger was quiet.
“Your memo assumed fabric mattered more than the people sewing it.”
Vanessa surrendered her law license for independent review and asked that her role be included in every reopened claim.
Grant tried to shift blame entirely onto her.
Anna answered, “Her responsibility does not reduce yours. You gave the order because contempt was useful.”
Federal agents detained Grant, Judge Ashford and the clinic director. Eleanor remained under investigation for concealment. Thomas testified without immunity.
Then Lily brought the hidden photograph to Anna’s video screen.
“Mommy, why are you wearing Grandma’s ring?”
Anna closed her eyes.
“Because Eleanor gave it to me after I married Grant.”
