Chapter 8 - THE LAWYER WHO PROTECTED THE HOTEL.
Daniel revealed that his father, Daniel Carter Sr., had served as the hotel’s labor counsel before his death.
Carter Sr. drafted the wage-freeze extensions and told Rose they were temporary survival measures. He also created the arbitration system that buried employee complaints.
Daniel had built his career believing his father protected workers.
Teresa’s voice remained calm.
“He protected the company from workers.”
Daniel recused himself and called outside counsel. His family connection did not erase the evidence.
The worker council opened Carter Sr.’s sealed files. They showed Brooke’s mother, Evelyn Sloan, had been the original staff representative who opposed the penthouse spending.
She vanished from company records after signing a settlement.
Brooke went pale.
“My mother died when I was a child.”
Rose shook her head.
“Evelyn lived. She wrote to you for years.”
A box of returned letters was found in Peter Sloan’s office.
Peter was Evelyn’s brother.
