Chapter 2 - THE FUNERAL WITHOUT A BABY.
Eight years earlier, Claire had delivered a healthy daughter in a private Philadelphia hospital funded by the Whitmore Foundation.
She was twenty-three, unmarried and the daughter of a hotel seamstress.
The Whitmores told her the baby had died after complications. Ethan was told Claire had taken money, ended the pregnancy and left town.
“You believed that?” Claire asked.
Ethan’s voice weakened.
“My father showed me a signed statement.”
“My mother could barely afford rent. Your family knew poverty would make any forged payment look believable.”
Mrs. Whitmore produced the hospital transfer log. A newborn identified only as “L.W.” had been moved through the hotel service entrance during a charity gala.
The ballroom camera still held the archive.
Onscreen, a nurse carried the infant past wealthy guests while Claire lay unconscious across town.
A young Ethan appeared near the elevator—but never turned around.
