Chapter 7 - THE LEDGER INSIDE THE PEARLS.

Mrs. Whitmore removed the false pearl and opened it with trembling fingers.
Inside was a storage key Rose had given her before disappearing.
For nineteen years, the matriarch had worn the evidence at galas while employees lost pensions beneath the same chandeliers.
Claire stared at her.
“You carried the truth around your neck and called silence protection.”
Mrs. Whitmore did not defend herself.
“Cowardice sounds respectable when wealthy people call it preserving the family.”
The key opened a safe behind the ballroom’s oldest mirror.
Inside were Rose’s notarized ledger, payroll deductions and recordings of Ethan’s father ordering managers to fire workers who mentioned ownership.
Sloan tried to leave.
Hotel employees closed the doors before security arrived.
The ledger activated an emergency clause transferring control to the employee trust after intimidation of a minor beneficiary.
Ethan lost his chairmanship immediately.
But the final recording was not from Rose.
