Ethan insisted the document was only a temporary protection agreement.
Claire read the language aloud.
It removed Lucy from her guardian, transferred her trust voting rights and prohibited contact with “financially motivated relatives.”
“That means me,” Claire said.
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“My attorneys said someone was using her to attack the company.”
Lucy looked up at him.
“You said nobody would believe a girl who lived with hotel workers.”
The guests shifted uncomfortably. Many had donated publicly to the Whitmore Children’s Fund while privately treating its residents as embarrassing evidence of poverty.
Mrs. Whitmore asked why Ethan needed Lucy’s signature before the gala ended.
He finally admitted that a major hotel merger required control of her trust by midnight.
Claire unfolded the original trust deed.
Lucy’s inheritance had not come from the Whitmores.
It came from Claire’s grandmother, who organized employees to save the hotel from bankruptcy.
