Mrs. Whitmore admitted taking Lucy from the hospital.
Ethan’s father had threatened to close the staff housing complex and fire Claire’s mother if anyone challenged the arrangement.
“I kept the child nearby,” the matriarch said. “I told myself that was mercy.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“You watched me grieve while raising my daughter as a charity case.”
Mrs. Whitmore accepted the accusation without asking forgiveness.
Lucy had lived with a retired hotel employee under a sealed guardianship. After the woman died, the Whitmores brought Lucy into their foundation program but never told Ethan who she was.
He had spent months calling his own daughter ungrateful because she asked why workers entered through separate doors.
In that family, curiosity became disrespect whenever it came from someone without money.
Then Lucy opened the small purse beneath her chair.
Inside was the statement Ethan had demanded she sign.
