Elena appeared in the footage wearing a gray coat and hospital slippers.
She stood behind the pantry door while Maya sat beside the trash.
She looked frightened, not cruel.
When Celeste turned away, Elena tried to step forward.
A man pulled her back into the hallway.
Adrian recognized him as Dr. Vincent Hale, director of the Cole Foundation’s private clinic.
Celeste said Elena had come voluntarily.
Nora answered with disgust.
“Voluntary women are not dragged away by doctors.”
Maya watched the video repeatedly.
“Mommy saw me?”
Adrian pulled her closer.
“She tried to reach you.”
Celeste rolled her eyes.
“This performance is exactly why Elena was removed. She encouraged Maya to question every boundary. Children need structure, not emotional chaos.”
Nora stepped toward her.
“You call cruelty structure because servants, wives, and children are expected to absorb it quietly.”
The guests who had remained silent began lowering their champagne glasses.
Celeste looked at them sharply.
“Do not pretend you are offended. Half of you asked me why Adrian let a mechanic’s daughter inherit Cole money.”
Maya’s mother had grown up above her father’s repair shop in Queens.
The family never forgave Adrian for marrying her.
Then the front-door camera chimed.
