Chapter 6 - THE LETTERS SHE NEVER LET MAYA READ.
Elena had written Maya every month for four years.
She described waking after the accident, asking for her daughter, and being told Adrian had remarried and wanted no contact.
Celeste had intercepted every letter.
She sent Adrian false medical reports claiming Elena could not speak.
She sent Elena photographs of Celeste standing beside Maya at school events and wrote that the child had forgotten her.
The cruelty was systematic.
Celeste had not merely separated a family.
She made each person believe the others chose the separation.
Adrian read one letter aloud.
“Tell Maya I never stopped being her mother, even when your lawyers stopped letting me say her name.”
Maya buried her face in his chest.
Celeste defended herself.
“Elena was never suited to this life. She embarrassed donors, sided with maids, and questioned every investment. You married beneath your position and made the rest of us pay for it.”
Rosa’s voice cut through the room.
“No. We paid. We served your dinners, cleaned your parties, and watched you call our children ‘bad influences’ when they stood too close to yours.”
Adrian asked why Celeste needed the mansion deed.
The answer was inside Elena’s final letter.
She had discovered that the Cole Foundation diverted scholarship money into luxury real estate.
The mansion had been purchased with those funds.
Then Maya pointed to Celeste’s diamond necklace.
“My mom wore that in one picture.”
