The custody order described Adrian as emotionally unstable and Elena as medically unfit.
It said Maya required a “socially appropriate environment” under Celeste’s supervision.
Adrian read the phrase twice.
“Socially appropriate means wealthy, doesn’t it?”
Dr. Hale remained calm.
“It means disciplined, secure, and free from disruptive influences.”
Nora pointed toward the bowl.
“You mean a home where a child is fed beside a trash can because she asked why staff members are treated differently?”
Celeste called the incident exaggerated.
“She ate ordinary food from a ceramic bowl. No one harmed her.”
Maya finally spoke louder.
“You made the guests laugh.”
The room went silent.
Humiliation had been the point.
Celeste wanted the child to associate questions with shame.
Dr. Hale claimed Maya had behavioral problems after Elena’s disappearance.
His report listed defiance, class resentment, and unhealthy attachment to domestic employees.
Adrian’s anger became colder.
“You diagnosed compassion as illness.”
Then Nora produced Maya’s school records.
Teachers described her as kind, observant, and protective of bullied classmates.
No behavioral concerns appeared until Celeste joined the household.
The custody order had been prepared before the party.
The humiliation was staged to support it.
Then the housekeeper, Rosa, opened the pantry safe.
Inside were Elena’s letters to Maya.
