Celeste claimed the petitions were recommendations from a child-development consultant.
Marcus read the attachments. They described Lily and Grace as aggressive, dishonest and incapable of managing future assets. Their refusal to wear “household training uniforms” was listed as proof of defiance.
The girls looked down at their gray-white dresses.
“She said rich children learn leadership,” Grace whispered. “Poor children learn service.”
Their late mother, Hannah, had left each girl a share of a Chicago apartment company and a protected education fund. If both were declared unfit, control would pass to Celeste after her marriage to Marcus.
Celeste insisted she wanted stability.
“You dressed my daughters as maids and frightened them until they would surrender their future,” Marcus said.
Then the consultant’s invoice surfaced.
