THE GIRLS SHE MADE SERVANTS / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER DECLARED DEAD.

A private investigator traced the account to a rehabilitation residence outside Milwaukee.

Hannah Hale was alive, conscious and living under another name.

Marcus had identified a body after a highway fire five years earlier, but the dental records had been replaced. Celeste claimed Hannah disappeared voluntarily after a breakdown.

During a secure video call, Hannah looked first at her daughters.

“I never left you.”

The twins did not rush toward the screen. Lily asked why she had never come home.

Hannah explained that Celeste’s charity used low-income girls as unpaid “etiquette trainees” in wealthy homes. When Hannah tried to expose it, a private doctor declared her unstable and restricted contact.

“You built your program on children serving rich families for free,” Marcus said.

Celeste called it vocational education.

Hannah answered, “Education gives children choices. You gave them uniforms and silence.”
