THE GLASS IN HIS BOOT. / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - THE EVIDENCE BENEATH HIS SHOE.

Kelsey Morgan’s keys struck the pavement before Nancy finished the sentence.

“Your husband hit me with a baseball bat… then told police I attacked him.”

Inside the Baltimore interview room, Kelsey found her mother trembling beneath a cold light, one lens missing from her gold-rimmed glasses.

“I never wanted to destroy your marriage,” Nancy whispered.

“You didn’t destroy anything. He did.”

Sergeant Christopher opened Ryan’s report.

“He says she attacked him with a fireplace poker.”

“My mother’s house has electric heat. There is no fireplace.”

Christopher stopped turning the page.

He placed a sealed bag on the desk. A curved shard of glass matched Nancy’s broken lens.

“It was embedded in your husband’s boot.”

Then he slid forward a second bag. Inside was red clay mixed with pale cemetery dust.

Kelsey stared at Ryan’s smiling photograph.

Nancy gripped her hand.

“He came home from your father’s grave before he came to mine.”

Christopher lowered his voice.

“And someone opened that grave last night.”
