Chapter 5 - THE CHILD KELSEY NEVER CARRIED.

Evelyn insisted she treated James after finding him unconscious near the contractor’s test garage.
“I tried to save him.”
Nancy answered, “You left my husband there while lawyers protected your family.”
Hospital logs showed Evelyn waited fifty-two minutes before calling an ambulance. During that time, Charles’s attorneys entered the garage and removed surveillance footage.
Ryan stared at her.
“You told me he died instantly.”
“I protected you from a scandal that would have destroyed your future.”
Kelsey remained controlled.
“You protected privilege by deciding a working widow could survive without truth.”
Federal agents froze the Morgan foundation. Donations intended for veterans had paid investigators to monitor mechanics, widows and injured service members.
One ledger listed Nancy as “contained.”
Another listed Kelsey as “integrated through marriage.”
Ryan’s parents had encouraged the relationship to monitor James’s family.
Then agents found a third category beneath Kelsey’s name:
“Asset transfer upon pregnancy.”
Kelsey stared at Ryan.

“There was never a child.”
Ryan whispered, “There was. They told me you lost it.”
