Ryan admitted James had uncovered defective steering assemblies in military vehicles, but denied knowing his death was deliberate.
Charles interrupted.
“Our company supplied affordable parts during a national shortage.”
Kelsey stared at him.
“Soldiers carried your savings on roads where brakes failed.”
Nancy revealed James had planned to testify with twenty-three civilian mechanics. Most were hourly workers. After his death, they were fired, blacklisted or offered settlements that vanished if they spoke.
Evelyn called the payments generous.
“A month’s wages is not justice for a ruined career,” Nancy replied.
Christopher arrested Ryan for evidence tampering and filing a false report.
Ryan looked at his mother.
“Ask her why she paid Nancy’s hospital bill twenty years ago.”
Nancy admitted the Morgans had funded Kelsey’s childhood surgery in exchange for James’s original files.
“He refused,” she said. “So they collected another way.”
The Army investigator opened James’s autopsy amendment.
