Chapter 3 - THE FRIEND WHO SIGNED HER AWAY.
Thomas Hale arrived with a lawyer and called the signature an emergency decision made by frightened teenagers.
Frank’s voice remained controlled.
“You were forty-two.”
Thomas had certified that Frank was dangerous and should not be told Margaret survived. He claimed the nursing home protected her from a violent marriage.
Ethan looked at Frank’s frail hands.
“Then where is the police report?”
There was none.
Nurse Mary recovered letters Margaret had written to Frank and David. Every envelope had been stamped RETURNED BY ADMINISTRATION.
David blamed his father.
“You were obsessed with that pension trust. Mom wanted peace.”
Frank opened one letter.
Margaret wrote that the facility was pressuring her to surrender teacher-retirement shares tied to the land beneath the building.
The trust had been funded by deductions from teachers, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and custodians so retirees could never be displaced.
Thomas later converted the land into a private-care corporation.
Then Mary found a second file bearing Margaret’s fingerprints.
