Chapter 5 - THE DAUGHTER WHO CHOSE NOT TO VISIT.
Laura stared at her mother’s file.
“I attended her funeral.”
The coffin had been closed. The nursing home arranged everything and billed the family foundation.
Patricia was found alive in a secured dementia wing under the alias Helen Ward. She was conscious, stable and recognized Laura.
Laura approached slowly.
“Mom?”
Patricia’s answer cut through the room.
“You stopped visiting before I disappeared.”
Laura admitted David told her Patricia had become violent and refused contact. She chose to believe him because caring for her mother threatened their promotion, mortgage and social life.
Patricia did not offer instant forgiveness.
“You were not powerless. You were busy.”
The review panel found David paid the facility to keep both mothers under aliases while using their absence to control family assets.
David claimed he did it to protect the pension trust from Frank’s risky investments.
Frank opened the accounts.
The trust remained solvent until David’s company began charging management fees that financed his vacation home and Laura’s charity gala.
