Chapter 1 - THE COVER ABOVE THEIR HEADS.
Eleanor shoved Claire into the pool with both hands.
Claire surfaced coughing, lifting her cuffed wrists above the water.
“I can’t swim like this!”
Daniel sprinted from the lawn and dove in fully dressed. He caught Claire beneath her shoulders just as Eleanor dropped the brass key through the deck drain.
Then she raised a black remote.
The automatic cover began sliding across the pool.
“Stop it!” Daniel shouted.
Eleanor’s expression remained cold.
“This family has survived worse scandals than one dishonest employee.”
Claire gasped before the water closed over her face.
“The key—she took it!”
Daniel pulled her toward the narrowing strip of daylight. The cover passed above them, turning the pool dark.
Then a maintenance worker struck the emergency cutoff.
The motor stopped inches before sealing them beneath it.
As Daniel pushed Claire toward the opening, she whispered:
“Eleanor didn’t cuff me because I stole money.”

She looked toward the mansion’s security camera.
“She cuffed me because I found out who owns this estate.”
