Claire had never seen the deed before that morning.
Her mother, Teresa Morgan, had served the Vale family for twenty-six years. She managed the mansion, raised Daniel during Eleanor’s absences, and organized the workers who saved the estate after the hurricane.
Yet at formal dinners, Teresa entered through the kitchen.
Eleanor introduced her as “the help.”
The deed named Teresa’s descendants as protectors of the employees’ ownership shares.
Claire had inherited that authority.
Eleanor laughed.
“Your mother cleaned this house. She did not own it.”
Rosa stepped forward.
“She paid the mortgage when your investment company failed.”
Daniel opened the accounting pages.
Worker deductions had covered taxes, repairs, and insurance while the Vale family claimed public credit for preserving the estate.
Claire looked at the white mansion behind Eleanor.
“My mother financed the roof above your parties, and you still made her eat beside the laundry room.”
Eleanor’s voice became crueler.
“She should have been grateful we employed her.”
Then Marcus unfolded the final page.
Teresa had not died from a sudden illness, as Claire had been told.
She had signed the deed only four months earlier.
