Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED THE VALE NAME.
Teresa explained that Arthur assaulted her when she was a young estate employee.
Eleanor discovered the pregnancy and offered money in exchange for silence.
Teresa refused the Vale surname but accepted work at the mansion so she could document the family’s crimes and protect the cooperative.
Claire’s marriage to Daniel had been arranged by Arthur’s advisors, who knew her identity and wanted her trust rights absorbed into the family.
Neither Claire nor Daniel had known.
The marriage was annulled immediately.
Daniel surrendered every estate share and accepted investigation for the documents he signed.
He did not ask Claire to forgive him for ignorance that had repeatedly protected him.
The mansion passed into the employee cooperative.
Staff housing became permanent.
Stolen relief money was returned through the sale of Vale properties, art, and private aircraft.
At Eleanor’s hearing, she told Claire:
“You would have had nothing without this family.”
Claire placed the handcuffs beside the original deed.
“My mother built what you called yours. All your family gave us was a reason to keep records.”
For once, Eleanor stood behind a locked door she could not control.
Then Teresa recovered the second pool remote.
Its memory showed who activated the cover.
