Victoria’s diamond ring lay beside her silver clutch, proving Ruth had been accused before anyone truly searched.
Ben held the blue passbook against his chest. “How much of her paycheck did you keep?”
Victoria looked toward the guests instead of her son. “Ruth lived here. Food, clothing and housing were part of her compensation.”
Ruth steadied herself against the armchair. “You deducted those things from wages I never received.”
A guest raised a phone containing photographs of payroll envelopes. For six years, Victoria had signed receipts showing Ruth was paid in full, while Ruth received only small cash advances and leftover groceries.
Victoria called it a family arrangement.
Ben pointed to the half loaf on the rug. “Families do not make someone skip dinner to save for their child.”
Then the passbook was examined. Ruth had deposited nearly every dollar under Ben’s name—but the account had been frozen that morning.
The withdrawal request carried Victoria’s signature.
