Chapter 6 - THE MONEY TAKEN FROM RUTH’S OWN FUND.
The armchair lining concealed a handwritten ledger documenting unpaid overnight care, false payroll receipts and medical deductions charged twice.
One page carried Ruth’s signature beside a payment of eighty thousand dollars.
Victoria smiled. “Ask your saintly nanny what she accepted.”
Ruth admitted taking the money when her daughter needed heart surgery. Victoria offered immediate treatment if Ruth withdrew a wage complaint and stayed silent about Elena.
“I chose my child,” Ruth said. “Other workers lost years because I did.”
The cook looked wounded. “You let us believe the records were gone.”
Ruth placed the entire amount, with interest, under restitution review and stepped away from any claim to lead the workers’ council.
Ben moved toward her, but the child advocate reminded everyone he did not have to comfort adults.
Mr. Carter then traced the surgery payment.
It did not come from Victoria’s money.
It came from the domestic-worker medical fund.
Victoria had withheld Ruth’s own benefit, then returned it as the price of silence.
