Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN DECLARED DEAD.
Elena Ruiz was located in a private rehabilitation residence outside Chicago, conscious and able to speak.
She had been told Ben died shortly after birth. Victoria had arranged the paperwork through a fertility lawyer connected to the Hayes family foundation.
Ben remained with a licensed child advocate while the adults spoke by secure video.
Elena’s first words were not an accusation.
“Is he safe?”
Ruth answered, “He is brave. He should never have needed to be.”
Victoria claimed Elena had surrendered custody in exchange for medical care.
Elena produced the agreement. She had signed while recovering from emergency surgery and facing a hospital bill she could never pay.
“They said wealthy parents could give him everything,” Elena said. “They did not say they would erase me.”
Ruth admitted she knew Ben was adopted but believed Elena had died.
The foundation paid the residence that kept Elena isolated.
Then auditors found the source of those payments.
