Chapter 7 - THE FATHER WHO BOUGHT HIS REDEMPTION.
Michael’s signature showed he knew about the coercive settlement.
Ruth had spent years believing he discovered the scheme only later. The ledger proved he approved the payment structure, then created restitution after guilt threatened his reputation.
Ben stared at his father’s photograph.
“Was anyone honest with me?”
Mr. Carter answered carefully. “Some people told parts of the truth when it became safer.”
Michael’s wrongdoing did not erase Victoria’s. His restitution plan did not erase the workers he had pressured first.
The workers voted that no Hayes family member, including Ben, would control the recovered fund automatically. An elected council would govern it.
Then Elena revealed that Michael had visited her residence one month before his death.
“He promised to bring Ben to me,” she said. “The next day, Victoria moved me under another name.”
Victoria blamed Michael for creating the entire problem.
Ruth replied, “Dead men should not become convenient containers for every living person’s guilt.”
