Victoria laughed once, sharp and frightened.
“A nanny cannot become guardian because a dead man wrote a sentimental letter.”
Mr. Carter disagreed. Michael’s notarized directive activated if Victoria used Ben’s assets for personal debt or mistreated the caregiver who had raised him.
Ruth did not celebrate.
“I never wanted to replace his mother. I wanted someone to stop her from spending what belonged to him.”
The canceled checks showed Victoria used Ben’s education trust for designer renovations, private vacations and the cocktail party surrounding them.
She argued that maintaining the home protected Ben’s social standing.
Ben looked at Ruth’s medicine on the rug.
“You spent my college money so rich people would like our lamps?”
Several guests lowered their eyes. They had praised Victoria’s charity events while Ruth served drinks in worn shoes.
Then Mr. Carter opened the DNA report.
Michael was Ben’s biological father.
Victoria was not listed as his biological mother.
