Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE CELLAR FLOOR.

Margaret Ashford knew something was wrong before she saw Sophia’s face.

The wine-cellar doors stood open to the rain, cold blue light spilling across the stone floor and the overturned tasting chair.

Sophia lay beside the broken tumbler in her emerald gown, one hand pressed to her bruised cheek.

Derek stood several feet away with a whiskey glass in his hand.

He did not kneel beside his wife.

He did not call for help.

He looked irritated that someone had entered.

“Sophia?”

Margaret rushed forward and cupped the younger woman’s face.

“Who did this?”

Sophia looked toward Derek.

“He shoved me into the chair.”

Derek lifted his glass as though the explanation bored him.

“She fell. Stay out of this.”

For years, Margaret had defended her only son whenever Sophia complained about his temper.

She had called their arguments private.

She had told Sophia that marriage into an old-money family required patience, discretion, and a thicker skin.

She had mistaken silence for stability because the silence protected the Ashford name.

Now she saw the result lying on the cellar floor.

When Derek stepped toward Sophia, Margaret rose and blocked him.

“Do not touch her.”

He laughed.

“You always take her side when she starts crying.”

Margaret reached inside her charcoal coat, removed a black radio, and pressed the button.

“Team One, enter now.”

Derek’s smile vanished.

“What did you do?”

Outside, three black SUVs passed through the iron gate, headlights sweeping across the wet driveway.

Private security moved toward the cellar entrance.

Margaret kept her eyes on her son.

“I ended your control.”

Then Sophia gripped Margaret’s wrist.

Her voice was barely audible.

“He wasn’t trying to stop me from leaving.”

Margaret looked down.

Sophia pointed toward the tasting table.

A thick black folder lay beneath the spilled whiskey.

“He was trying to make me sign that.”
