Sophia grew up believing her father lost his job because he made a serious accounting mistake.
Derek repeated that story throughout their marriage.
Whenever Sophia questioned Ashford finances, he reminded her that suspicion had already destroyed one man in her family.
The truth was the opposite.
Her father, Michael Bennett, discovered that Ashford executives were moving employee-benefit money into private real-estate deals.
He reported the transfers to Margaret’s husband.
Instead of investigating, the company accused Michael of falsifying invoices.
No criminal charges were filed because a real trial could expose the records.
The Ashfords simply destroyed his professional reputation.
He spent the rest of his life repairing commercial elevators while former colleagues refused to return his calls.
Sophia had married Derek without knowing his family engineered her father’s humiliation.
Derek claimed he learned about Michael only after the wedding.
Claire produced emails proving otherwise.
He had studied Sophia’s family history before their first date.
He knew she carried shares inherited from a small labor-insurance cooperative founded by her father.
Those shares gave her limited authority over the very pension accounts Derek wanted to control.
The marriage had been romantic to Sophia.
To Derek, it began as an acquisition.
The revelation hurt more than the shove.
Sophia had spent years defending him to her mother, friends, and former coworkers.
She believed his coldness came from pressure.
She believed his family’s contempt could be softened through patience.
Now every apology he demanded from her felt like another transaction.
Margaret asked Sophia what she wanted.
Derek interrupted.
“She wants money. That is what people from her background always want when they enter families like ours.”
Sophia slowly rose.
Her cheek remained bruised, but her voice was steady.
“My father wanted the truth. You called him poor so no one would notice he was right.”
Claire requested an emergency company vote.
Derek laughed.
He controlled the board through family trusts and donor proxies.
Then Margaret removed a document from inside her coat.
Before entering the cellar, she had signed a temporary transfer of her voting rights.
Derek assumed they went to him.
Margaret handed the document to Sophia.
“I gave them to the person you tried to silence.”
Sophia now held enough votes to suspend Derek.
But before she could act, the cellar lights went out.
