Chapter 8 - THE WITNESS HIDING UPSTAIRS.
Security searched every formal room and found no intruder.
The ballroom guests had already been moved to the east wing.
Staff members were accounted for.
The only person missing was Margaret’s longtime personal secretary, Helen Ward.
Helen had managed the matriarch’s calendar, signatures, medical appointments, and private correspondence for twenty-six years.
Margaret trusted her more than most relatives.
That trust gave Helen access to the biometric tablet used during Margaret’s surgery, the doctor’s clinic, and the security system controlling the cellar.
When guards found her upstairs, she did not run.
She sat in Margaret’s study beside an open safe.
Inside were copies of pension transfers, medical evaluations, and confidential settlements signed over three decades.
Helen admitted assisting Derek.
She had also assisted his father.
Her explanation was not greed.
It was resentment.
She came from a poor farming family and entered Ashford service at nineteen.
Margaret praised her loyalty but never invited her to the family table.
Helen watched the Ashfords inherit homes, companies, and authority while she scheduled the meetings that preserved them.
Derek promised her a board seat and a large retirement account if she helped remove Sophia and Margaret.
Helen accepted because, for the first time, someone offered her the power she believed she had earned.
Rosa listened without sympathy.
“You did not fight the system. You helped it hurt the next woman below you.”
Helen had used class injustice as permission to reproduce it.
She planted the medical file.
She activated the cellar lockdown.
She arranged the photograph.
But she denied ordering Derek to shove Sophia.
Derek acted on his own when Sophia refused to sign.
Margaret felt betrayed, yet she also saw the consequences of a household structure built on dependence rather than equality.
She had called Helen family without giving her family rights.
She had expected gratitude to replace fairness.
Sophia ordered every employee contract and pension account reviewed by independent representatives.
Helen would still face consequences.
The system that helped create her resentment would also change.
Then security opened the study’s final safe compartment.
A recent video showed Margaret meeting Derek alone three days earlier.
Her voice was clear.
“Whatever happens, Sophia must sign before midnight.”
