Chapter 5 - THE DAUGHTER THEY ERASED BEFORE SOPHIA.
Claire had not died in a sailing accident.
She had been placed in a private psychiatric residence after accusing Derek and their late father of financial fraud.
The Ashford family announced her death because an absent daughter created questions.
A dead daughter created sympathy.
Margaret had believed the official report.
She had attended a closed-casket funeral.
She had accepted condolences from governors, judges, and business leaders while Claire remained alive only two states away.
The injustice forced Margaret to confront more than Derek’s lies.
The Ashford system had erased one woman before he tried to erase two more.
Claire placed the medical report on the tasting table.
The doctor who declared Sophia unstable was the same doctor who signed Claire’s confinement papers.
He had never examined either woman independently.
His clinic received annual payments from Ashford Development.
Derek accused Claire of revenge.
She answered calmly.
“You said that when I questioned the accounts. You said I was jealous. Then emotional. Then dangerous. Every word became more serious as the evidence became harder to deny.”
Sophia saw her own future in Claire’s story.
Had she signed the papers, Derek would have removed her from the company, isolated her from friends, and told society she needed rest.
The bruised cheek would become a symptom of instability rather than evidence of what happened.
Margaret asked Claire how she escaped.
Rosa had helped her.
For years, Rosa sent letters through relatives, preserved medical records, and saved enough money to hire an independent attorney.
A housekeeper earning hourly wages had done what the Ashford family’s wealthiest allies refused to do.
She believed the woman everyone else called unstable.
Derek looked at Rosa with hatred.
“You were paid to serve this family.”
Rosa answered, “I was paid to work. I was never paid to help you bury people.”
Claire opened a second folder.
Inside were records showing Derek had not acted alone.
Their late father created the first pension scheme and used Claire’s confinement to protect it.
Margaret’s name appeared on several old board resolutions.
She insisted she had never seen them.
Claire looked at her mother without softness.
“You signed whatever Father placed in front of you.”
Margaret could not deny it.
