Chapter 7 - THE CELLAR HE BUILT AS A TRAP.

Emergency lights turned the stone cellar red.

The security radio stopped working.

The SUVs outside went silent.

Derek smiled.

He had installed a private lockdown system during the renovation, supposedly to protect the family’s rare wine collection.

In reality, the cellar could be sealed from an off-site control room.

Margaret’s convoy had entered the estate, but someone loyal to Derek had taken control of the security network.

Derek said the doors would remain locked until Sophia signed the transfer papers.

He still believed fear would restore the hierarchy.

Margaret had money.

Claire had evidence.

Rosa had years of records.

Sophia had the votes.

But Derek believed the locked room made him powerful again.

Rosa examined the old bottle racks.

Before the renovation, the cellar connected to a servants’ passage running beneath the kitchen.

Derek had covered the entrance with a climate-control panel.

The Ashfords forgot the passage because family members had never used it.

Employees remembered.

Rosa removed two bottles, pressed an iron latch, and opened a narrow stone doorway.

Derek stared at her.

The mansion’s invisible workers knew exits the owners had never bothered to learn.

Margaret led Sophia through first.

Claire followed with the folders.

Rosa remained behind long enough to take the black folder and Derek’s untouched whiskey glass.

He tried to stop her.

Security guards entered through the passage and restrained him without force beyond what was necessary.

The lockdown failed because Derek designed it around formal doors.

He never imagined the staff corridors mattered.

Outside, the rain had intensified.

Employees gathered beneath the covered drive, waiting to learn whether their pensions still existed.

Sophia stood before them in her torn emerald gown.

She did not hide her bruised cheek.

Derek’s attorney warned that public accusations could reduce property values and trigger layoffs.

Sophia answered, “Then sell family assets before one worker loses a paycheck.”

She used Margaret’s proxy to suspend Derek and freeze every Ashford-controlled account connected to employee benefits.

The workers began to applaud.

Margaret stopped them gently.

“This is not our victory yet.”

Claire held up the preserved medical report.

The doctor who signed it was driving toward the estate.

He had requested a private meeting.

When his car arrived, it was empty.

On the passenger seat lay a photograph of Sophia entering the wine cellar.

It had been taken from inside the mansion.

The photographer was still in the house.
