Chapter 2 - THE PAPER HE WANTED HER TO SIGN.
The folder contained more than divorce papers.
It transferred Sophia’s voting shares, her rights to the Ashford estate, and temporary control of her medical decisions to Derek.
One paragraph stated that Sophia had become emotionally unstable and could no longer manage family assets responsibly.
Her signature line was already marked in pencil.
Derek claimed the documents were a precaution.
He said Sophia had been threatening to damage the company over a misunderstanding involving household accounts.
Margaret read the medical-control clause twice.
The language was almost identical to papers she had once signed against her own sister during a family inheritance dispute.
In the Ashford world, inconvenient women were rarely called truthful.
They were called unstable.
Sophia came from a working-class neighborhood outside Pittsburgh.
Her father repaired elevators.
Her mother worked in a county records office.
Derek had spent years reminding her that the mansion, the club memberships, and the Ashford name were gifts she had not earned.
Whenever Sophia questioned a financial decision, he accused her of resenting wealth.
Whenever she asked about employees whose benefits had been cut, he said she did not understand the responsibilities of ownership.
Now his attorney had transformed those accusations into legal language.
Margaret asked whether Sophia had seen a doctor.
Derek said a private specialist had already completed an evaluation.
Sophia shook her head.
“I never met him.”
Derek’s attorney arrived through the cellar doors before security had finished securing the room.
That timing told Margaret the visit had been planned.
The attorney looked at Sophia on the floor, then addressed Derek first.
He advised everyone to avoid emotional statements.
Sophia laughed bitterly.
“My bruised face is emotional. His paperwork is professional.”
The attorney claimed Derek had legal grounds to protect the estate from a spouse acting under outside influence.
Margaret asked who the outside influence was.
He opened a second envelope.
Inside were photographs of Sophia meeting privately with several Ashford housekeepers and grounds workers.
Derek pointed at them.
“She has been organizing the staff against this family.”
