Chapter 1 - The Woman They Chose to Blame

The cane was already in the air when Maya Carter ran across the Harrington kitchen and dropped between Vanessa and the wheelchair.

“Stop! Don’t touch her!” she shouted, wrapping her body around Eleanor Harrington as if a navy-blue uniform could become armor.

The wooden cane struck Maya’s raised forearm and sent her to the polished floor, while Eleanor remained trembling but safe.

At that exact moment, the double front doors opened and Arthur Harrington entered with a silver suitcase, expecting a quiet return from his business trip.

Instead, he saw his fiancée standing beside the fallen cane, his mother pale in her wheelchair, and a home-care nurse clutching a reddening arm.

Vanessa did not hesitate.

She pointed at Maya and cried that the nurse had attacked Eleanor for money.

Arthur’s eyes moved from Vanessa’s tailored beige suit and gold earrings to Maya’s worn white sneakers and modest badge.

His doubt lasted only a second, but Maya saw the verdict form before he spoke.

Vanessa belonged to his world.

Maya worked in it.

Eleanor tried to raise one shaking hand, yet Vanessa cut her off, calling her confused.

Humiliation burned hotter than the mark on Maya’s skin as Arthur asked her to explain herself like a criminal.

Vanessa’s face changed—but before Arthur could reach for his phone, the camera’s red light went dark.
