Chapter 5 - Handcuffs at the Charity Dinner

The police led Maya through the grand dining room in handcuffs because Vanessa insisted the servants’ corridor was unsafe.
Dozens of wealthy guests turned in their chairs, watching the nurse they had never met become the evening’s entertainment.
Vanessa stood near the podium, one hand pressed dramatically to her chest, and announced that the family had caught an employee exploiting a vulnerable old woman.
Someone began recording on a phone.
Another guest whispered that people from “those neighborhoods” often targeted private homes.
Maya heard every word.
Arthur walked beside the officers but would not meet her eyes.
She begged him to examine the bank records, the medication logs, and the second camera, yet he told her this was no longer the place to argue.
“Of course it isn’t,” Maya replied.
“This room was built so people like you never have to hear people like me.”
Her words silenced him, but only for a moment.
Vanessa demanded that Rosa be fired as well, accusing the housekeeper of helping Maya.
Rosa’s twenty years of loyalty disappeared with one sentence from a woman who had lived there less than a year.
Then the elevator doors opened.
Eleanor rolled into the dining room alone, her hands shaking on the wheels.
Vanessa hurried toward her, claiming she needed rest, but Eleanor slapped Vanessa’s hand away.
“I am old,” she said, her voice thin but unmistakable.
“I am not stupid.”
She told the officers that Maya had saved her life and that Vanessa had manipulated her medication.
Arthur stared at his mother as if seeing her for the first time.
Vanessa laughed nervously and called the statement proof of dementia.
Eleanor then pointed toward the ballroom screen and ordered Rosa to play the backup recording.
Rosa reached for the remote—but the screen displayed only a black image and a message:
May you like
FILE CORRUPTED.
Vanessa smiled, and the police tightened their grip on Maya’s arms.
