Chapter 9 - The Heir They Tried to Criminalize
Arthur ordered the mansion locked down while Eleanor’s attorney contacted the bank.
Vanessa’s lawyers protested, claiming she was being detained without cause, but the catering video, forged medical documents, and trust transfers finally gave the police grounds to act.
Even so, Vanessa remained confident.
She explained that wealthy families did not survive by telling the truth.
They survived by controlling which truth entered the official record.
Maya understood that the false assault allegation had been prepared months earlier.
Vanessa had researched Lillian’s history, discovered the sealed codicil, and learned that any criminal charge against Maya could trigger automatic disqualification.
The cane confrontation had been staged to provoke a reaction, but Maya’s instinct to protect Eleanor ruined the plan.
Arthur apologized again, this time in front of the guests, admitting that he had judged Maya by her uniform, income, and place in the household.
He confessed that he had mistaken social polish for character and employment for inferiority.
Yet Maya refused to offer him easy forgiveness.
Public remorse could not return the jobs Rosa had lost, the years Lillian had lived in disgrace, or the moment Maya stood handcuffed while strangers discussed her poverty like evidence.
Eleanor’s attorney returned with a digital copy of Charles’s codicil.
It named Maya as co-heir to the Harrington foundation and granted her authority over its labor and elder-care programs.
However, a final clause required proof that Charles had legally acknowledged paternity before his death.
The only document capable of proving it was a notarized birth acknowledgment stored in the mansion’s original security server.
Rosa rushed to the control room and found the cabinet open.
