That evening, Vanessa welcomed senators, executives, and society donors into the mansion for a fundraiser devoted to “protecting vulnerable seniors.”
Crystal glasses sparkled beneath chandeliers while she delivered a speech about dignity and compassion, accepting applause from people who had no idea she had raised a cane over an elderly woman hours earlier.
In the service corridor below, Maya returned through the rear entrance with Rosa’s help.
Every step felt like trespassing inside a house where she had worked twelve-hour shifts for two years.
Rosa revealed that Eleanor had hidden a second recording device in her private study after noticing money disappearing from her medical trust.
The brass key opened a narrow drawer behind a false panel.
Inside, Maya found bank statements, altered medication logs, and payments sent to a private legal firm that specialized in declaring elderly clients mentally incompetent.
She also found an old employment file bearing her mother’s name, Lillian Carter.
According to the file, Lillian had been accused of stealing jewelry twenty-four years earlier, but a handwritten note from Eleanor said the accusation had been fabricated after Lillian discovered fraudulent transfers.
Maya’s knees weakened.
Her mother had spent the rest of her life carrying shame that belonged to someone else.
Upstairs, wealthy guests laughed while Vanessa praised justice.
Then the study door opened.
Arthur stood there, staring at Maya with the documents spread across the desk.
Vanessa appeared behind him and screamed that Maya had broken in to steal confidential records.
Arthur saw the open safe, Maya holding financial papers, and Rosa beside her.
For one brief moment, he seemed ready to listen.
