Chapter 7 - What the Camera Really Saw

The lawyer’s mistake cracked Vanessa’s performance.
He called Arthur “Mr. Vale,” a surname linked to a private holding company that had been quietly receiving money from Eleanor’s trust.
Arthur demanded an explanation, but Vanessa insisted it was only a clerical misunderstanding.
The catering assistant recovered his phone and sent the video to the ballroom screen before anyone could stop him.
The first image showed Vanessa standing over Eleanor with the cane raised.
The second showed Maya running into frame, shielding the wheelchair, and taking the blow.
Then came the sound that destroyed Vanessa’s last defense.
Her own voice could be heard rehearsing the accusation seconds before Arthur entered.
“She attacked your mother. I was trying to stop her,” Vanessa had whispered to the lawyer, testing the lie before performing it.
The room fell completely silent.
Guests who had called Maya a thief lowered their eyes.
None of them apologized.
Their shame remained private, while Maya’s humiliation had been public.
The officers removed her handcuffs, but the red marks around her wrists seemed to burn brighter beneath the chandeliers.
Arthur approached her and said he was sorry.
Maya stepped back.
“You are sorry because the screen proved me innocent,” she said.
“You should have been sorry when my word was all I had.”
Eleanor ordered security to detain Vanessa, yet Vanessa suddenly laughed.
She claimed the footage proved only assault, not financial fraud, and warned that exposing the trust transfers would destroy the Harrington name.
Arthur asked what she meant.
Vanessa turned toward Maya with cold satisfaction.
“Tell him why your mother’s name appears beside his father’s in every sealed file.”

Rosa opened the old employment folder, and a hidden photograph slipped onto the floor.
It showed Arthur’s father standing beside Lillian Carter, holding a newborn baby.
