Chapter 6 - The Memory They Tried to Erase
Vanessa used the corrupted file as a weapon.
She told the officers that Maya and Rosa had fabricated evidence, manipulated Eleanor, and staged the entire confrontation to gain access to the Harrington estate.
Several guests immediately supported her, not because they knew the truth, but because they knew Vanessa’s family, attended the same clubs, and trusted the same lawyers.
Maya realized that class was not merely money.
It was a network of people prepared to believe one another without proof.
Eleanor struggled to explain that Vanessa had doubled her sedatives before meetings with Arthur, hidden her phone, and dismissed caregivers who asked questions.
Arthur looked devastated, yet he still asked whether his mother might be misremembering.
That question wounded Eleanor more deeply than the cane ever could.
“You doubt me because she taught you to,” Eleanor said.
“And because believing a rich woman is easier than admitting you ignored an old one.”
Maya saw Arthur flinch, but Vanessa quickly redirected the room.
She produced documents showing that Eleanor had supposedly signed over medical decision-making authority to Arthur after being declared cognitively impaired.
Maya examined the signature and recognized the date.
It was a day Eleanor had been hospitalized and physically unable to sign anything.
She shouted that the authorization was forged.
Vanessa called her desperate.
Then a young catering assistant stepped forward.
He had been replacing a ceiling light when the confrontation occurred and had accidentally recorded part of it on his phone.
Every face turned toward him.
Vanessa offered him money to remain silent without even lowering her voice, revealing more than she intended.
The assistant raised his phone to play the video, but before he could unlock it, a suited man from Vanessa’s legal team seized the device and claimed it contained confidential footage.
Arthur finally stepped between them.

The lawyer refused—and called Arthur by a name no one in the room had heard before.
