Chapter 2 - A Rich Woman’s Tears

Vanessa began crying before anyone had accused her of anything.
Her tears were perfect, controlled, and visible enough for Arthur to see.
She claimed Maya had been acting strangely for weeks, asking questions about Eleanor’s accounts and lingering near locked drawers.
Arthur listened with the solemn expression of a judge, while Maya stood barefoot on one side of the kitchen because one of her shoes had come off during the fall.
The contrast was cruel.
Vanessa looked elegant even in panic, and Maya looked disordered even in innocence.
Eleanor forced out the words, “Vanessa raised the cane,” but Arthur knelt beside his mother and asked whether she was certain, as though age had automatically made her truth unreliable.
Vanessa stroked his shoulder and suggested that Eleanor’s medication had affected her memory.
Maya could feel the entire hierarchy of the house closing around her.
A wealthy fiancée’s fear became evidence.
A nurse’s injury became suspicion.
When Arthur checked the security system, the crucial twelve minutes were missing.
Vanessa gasped and immediately accused Maya of deleting them.
Arthur turned to Maya with disappointment instead of curiosity.
He asked whether financial pressure had driven her to steal, and the question shattered something inside her.
She had cared for Eleanor through sleepless nights, cleaned wounds no family member wanted to see, and skipped meals to send money home—yet one elegant lie erased all of it.
Arthur ordered her to remain in the kitchen until security arrived.
Maya lowered her eyes, not in guilt but to hide her rage.

Then Eleanor leaned close enough to whisper, “The main camera is not the only one.”
Before Maya could ask what she meant, Vanessa noticed them speaking and demanded that Eleanor be taken upstairs immediately.
