THE PHONE HE NEVER SAW / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - THE CONFESSION BESIDE HER FACE.

Damon dragged Claire across the polished bedroom floor while Vanessa followed with a wineglass and a smile that made the humiliation feel rehearsed.

“She finally learned her place.”

Damon released Claire beside the bed. She fell onto her side, breathing hard, the faint bruise above her eyebrow burning beneath the warm lamp.

A cracked black phone lay inches from her hand.

Damon stood over her.

“No one will believe you. You came into this family with secondhand dresses and overdue bills. I gave you a surname people respect.”

Claire moved one finger toward the screen.

Damon continued, louder now.

“This house, the money—everything belongs to me. You will sign the transfer tomorrow, and then you will leave quietly.”

Claire pressed the red button.

A soft tone confirmed that the recording had been sent.

She raised her eyes.

“You just confessed.”

A calm voice came through the phone.

“Evidence received. Help is coming.”

Damon froze.

Vanessa set down her glass.

Then she laughed.

“You think one recording makes you powerful?”

She opened her purse and removed a court order declaring Claire mentally unstable.

According to the document, anything Claire recorded could be dismissed as the delusion of a dangerous wife.
