Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER THEY ERASED WITHOUT A FUNERAL.
Claire had been told Anna died in a bus accident fifteen years earlier.
There had been a closed casket, a hurried burial, and a Hale family donation that paid the funeral bill.
Now the clinic file showed Anna alive for at least eleven years after that funeral.
Damon looked genuinely surprised.
Vanessa did not.
Claire saw it immediately.
“You knew.”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I knew your mother had problems.”
“She discovered your family was stealing from employees.”
“She was a housekeeper who copied files she was not educated enough to interpret.”
Claire stood slowly, one hand against the bed.
“My mother understood the numbers well enough for your family to bury her under a false name.”
The clinic ledger listed Anna as “Patient 47.” Her treatment costs were paid through the Hale Domestic Stability Fund—a charity presented publicly as emergency housing for vulnerable women.
In reality, the fund financed private confinement for employees who challenged wealthy families.
Damon tried to separate himself from it.
“My father controlled that foundation.”
Rosa looked at him with disgust.
“And you inherited the buildings, the accounts, and the silence. Strange how rich men inherit every benefit but none of the guilt.”
The investigator found a recent payment authorized from Damon’s account.
It had been made only six weeks earlier.
Damon swore he had signed a routine insurance batch.
Claire stared at him.
“That excuse may save your pride. It will not save my mother.”
Then Rosa opened the cracked phone’s hidden archive.
