THE PHONE HE NEVER SAW / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - THE DIAGNOSIS WRITTEN BEFORE THE BRUISE.

Vanessa placed the court order on the bed as if it were a winning card.

“By sunrise, you will be in private care. Damon will tell everyone you hurt yourself during another episode.”

Claire stared at the date.

The psychiatric evaluation had been completed before the bruise on her face existed.

Damon crouched at a distance and spoke in the patient tone he used whenever witnesses were nearby.

“You have been confused for months. You accuse everyone because you cannot accept that this life is too large for you.”

Claire’s voice remained quiet.

“You mean this life is too expensive for me to be believed.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Exactly. Courts listen to doctors, husbands, and family attorneys. They do not listen to women whose mothers cleaned their houses.”

The cruelty was deliberate. Claire’s mother, Anna Reyes, had worked for Damon’s family for twenty-two years before being fired for allegedly stealing estate documents.

Claire had spent half her life trying to clear her name.

Then heavy footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Damon relaxed.

“My security team is here.”

The door opened.

Two state investigators entered with the mansion’s longtime housekeeper, Rosa, behind them.

Rosa pointed toward Claire’s phone.

“The recording did not go only to the police.”

It had also been transmitted to every employee whose pension Damon had ordered Claire to erase.

Then Rosa placed a second phone on the bed.

It contained video of Vanessa paying the doctor who signed Claire’s diagnosis.
