Chapter 3 - THE WOMEN THEY CALLED UNSTABLE.
Vanessa claimed the payment was for a legitimate family consultation.
The investigator played the full recording.
Vanessa’s voice was unmistakable:
“Use words like paranoid, fixated, and emotionally volatile. Wealthy judges understand those words.”
Claire looked at her.
“You built a diagnosis out of every emotion you caused.”
Damon interrupted.
“She has always been dramatic. She cried when I asked her to stop interfering with company finances.”
Claire answered, “You asked me to delete the pension ledger.”
The investigator turned toward him.
Damon immediately called the ledger a private business matter.
Rosa stepped forward.
“My husband worked for this family until his back gave out. We paid into that pension for thirty years. You bought Vanessa a condo with it.”
Vanessa’s face sharpened.
“You lived on estate property below market rent. Do not speak as though the family gave you nothing.”
Rosa replied, “A discount does not turn theft into kindness.”
The investigators sealed Claire’s court order, the wineglass, and Damon’s phone.
Then one of them revealed that Claire was not the first woman declared unstable after challenging Hale family finances.
There were nine others.
Housekeepers. Assistants. A bookkeeper. Damon’s aunt.
Every diagnosis came from the same private clinic.
The oldest file belonged to Anna Reyes.
Claire’s mother had not been fired for stealing documents.
