Chapter 1 - THE PLATE THAT ENDED THE ENGAGEMENT.

Eleanor lifted the salad plate and threw it into Maya’s face before anyone at the table could move.

Dressing slid through Maya’s curls and across the ivory satin dress she had bought with three months of savings.

“That’s what happens when you forget your place,” Eleanor said.

Ryan leaned back and laughed.

“You should see yourself.”

Maya’s humiliation hardened into silence. Then Eleanor added, “You will never belong in this family.”

Maya stood and slapped her once, controlled and final.

Ryan’s smile disappeared.

“You laughed while she humiliated me,” Maya said. “Why should I marry into this family?”

She removed her engagement ring and placed it beside the intact plate.

As she turned to leave, she noticed initials engraved beneath its rim: I.B.

They belonged to her late father, Isaiah Brooks, who had served as the Whitmores’ private chef.

Under the plate was a folded note in his handwriting:

“Maya—if Eleanor serves dinner on this china, she has discovered the trust.”
