Maya opened Isaiah’s note while the household staff gathered near the doorway.
Her father had written that the Whitmore dining collection was purchased with money withheld from cooks, maids and drivers during the family’s near-bankruptcy.
In exchange, forty-two workers were promised ownership in the Whitmore Hospitality Group.
Eleanor called the promise sentimental nonsense.
“Your father was a cook. He prepared meals. He did not build corporations.”
Head housekeeper Gloria Reed stepped forward.
“We worked without full pay for fourteen months while your family kept this mansion.”
Ryan ordered security to remove the staff.
No one moved.
Maya read the final paragraph aloud. If a Whitmore publicly degraded an heir of the worker trust or forced that heir to surrender a claim, voting control transferred immediately to the employees.
Eleanor’s face changed.
Ryan whispered, “Mother, you said the clause expired.”
Maya looked at him.
